On Demand - Day 6
Day 6 | What’s in Your Fridge?
In 2020, German photographer Sandra Juncker compared the refrigerators and their owners of 14 families worldwide - link here. Until I saw this, I hadn't realized how intimate it is to share your fridge with the world. Considering the global perspective of this project awakened me, making me even more grateful for the luxury of a full fridge and that we are doing this cleanse together. It prompts a reflection – what's in your fridge?
What we put in our fridge signals how we nourish our bodies. Does it represent you well? Or do you notice things now that make you pause? Is it cluttered or organized? Are we mindful of not letting perfectly good things go to waste? Do we appreciate the means we have, especially if someone cleans our fridge for us?
What we keep in our fridge is more than just groceries – it's a reflection of how we "pattern our health." I recall a meme of a fortune teller with a crystal ball. The caption read: ‘I’m a different kind of psychic… 'show me your fridge and I’ll tell you your future.’ What we eat today will determine how we feel tomorrow. Moreover, it directly influences the future of our health. Today is an opportunity to make a conscious choice, echoing James Clear's wisdom – we make "a vote for the person we want to be tomorrow." We do this by creating systems for healthier eating. So, let’s all go into the kitchen today.
While in the kitchen, notice what food could be used before it spoils. A Forbes article from 2020 estimated that the average US household wastes 30-40% of their food. Being mindful with food, reducing waste, and modulating behavior are all part of getting on the beam in our Yoga Body Cleanse. Here are some simple, doable actions to make this process more enjoyable.
ACTION
Clear out the old: Take a few minutes to go through your fridge and discard anything past its prime.
Organize and clean: Dedicate at least 20 minutes to organize and clean your fridge. Put on some music or play a podcast to make the task enjoyable.
Prep & chop: Before restocking, prep items like veggies or meal prep foods and organize with stackable storage items and mason jars.
Use what you have: Before buying more of the same food, challenge yourself to create something with what you already have, especially items that might go bad soon. This could become a fun and rewarding weekly ritual.
Donate non-perishables: Before throwing out perfectly good, non-perishable items, donate them. It's a small act that can make a big difference.
Feel the difference: Notice how this simple act makes you feel in your body. Clarity and organization often bring a sense of satisfaction. Dare I say, it could be fun?
