Day 6 ❍ Giving & the Art of Clearing Space

On nearly every Yoga Body Cleanse, we dedicate a day to Clearing Space in our environment, a yoga practice of saucha (cleanliness). The core of this practice draws inspiration from Marie Kondo and her groundbreaking book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Today, we approach this practice with adaptability, viewing it through the lens of giving—asking ourselves: How can I give during this process?

It’s time to take a clear look at your closet. As you decide what to let go of—a yoga practice of aparigraha (non-grasping)—consider what you can give—a practice of seva (giving back). Most of us are familiar with donating to goodwill, often tossing in items that are no longer useful to us, but we would never want to wear it again. And that’s okay! Many of those items can still serve others or other purposes even.  But today, let’s take this practice further:

Keep in mind the people and families who have just lost their homes. If you were giving clothes to them, which pieces would you choose? Focus on items that are lightly used, clean, and desirable.

For those of us out of immediate harm’s way, having so much, we are graced with the agency to let go intentionally. But, as many of us know, letting go can be easier said than done. It implies change—removing the energy and presence of something. And yet, once we do it, we feel lighter, clearer, and more revitalized.

Remember, clutter holds energy. Whether visible or hidden, it vibrates and can impact our environment. By releasing clutter, we shift that energy, opening space for new possibilities. And today, we look at it through a lens of giving—mindfully clearing clutter while contributing to those in need.

ACTIONS

  1. Go through your closet:

    • Create piles to throw away, donate for fire victims, donate in general, and keep.

    • Practice the Kondo method by thanking the items you let go and keeping things that spark joy.

  2. Keep it clean:

    • Make sure the clothes you donate are clean, lightly used, and in good condition.

  3. Stay connected:

    • Check our WhatsApp group for updates on where to donate for fire victims.

  4. Streamline your space:

    • Pay attention to the flow of your environment.

    • Are items stored in the right place? For example, office supplies belong in the office, not the dining room sideboard. Mis-placed items can reflect decisions you’re still grappling with.

JOURNAL & REFLECTION

  • After clearing one of your spaces, reflect on how it feels. What shifts do you notice?

  • Write a vision for a family in need receiving support. How does it feel to imagine their gratitude? Meditate on this.

Let’s take this opportunity to clear space, create flow, and give back. One small step at a time, together.

I love you. Keep going!
