Day 8 ❍ Detoxing Information Overload

Trance: (noun)

  1. A half-conscious state characterized by an absence of response to external stimuli, typically as induced by hypnosis or entered by a medium.

Have you ever felt sick to your stomach because of something happening or something said to you? The powerful energy center of the third chakra, the solar plexus, resides in the stomach area, where we digest our food. But as an energy field, the solar plexus also processes information.

When this chakra is out of balance, we may find ourselves feeling anxious and irritated—or completely drained, as if weighed down by an energetic hangover. Before we realize it, we’re caught in a trance, replaying a story on a loop, like incessant “chatter” echoing through the consciousness of our mind and our body.

Long before the iPhone, cable news, social media, and Tinder, yoga was created to bring us into presence. Even thousands of years ago, there was a calling to address distraction and the chatter of the mind. This chatter can become so repetitive and alluring that it pulls us away from our conscious state. And before we know it, the pint of ice cream is gone while we’re typing away on our laptop. “How did that happen!? (Again.)”

As we move into our second week, many of us find ourselves consumed by the news—understandably so, given the tragic wildfires in Los Angeles and other global crises. Let’s take a moment to pause and deepen our practice of conscious awareness. Notice the kinds of information you’re taking into your body and how your breath and movement respond. Explore tools to support yourself as you navigate the need to stay informed about deeply distressing events.

Consumption isn’t just about food.
It’s the stories we replay in our minds, the energy we absorb from others, and the environments we immerse ourselves in. When we’re caught in this trance, we become less responsive to the external stimuli that nurture and sustain us, including our practice of self-care. Often, our consumptive behaviors interweave and domino, their root nestled in the intricate connection between our mind and body. Today, let’s explore ways to process what we’re consuming and bring more harmony and balance within.

JOURNAL

  • Practice stream-of-consciousness writing to release everything you’re processing right now.

  • What is something you feel grateful for at this moment?

  • In the midst of something deeply challenging (whether in the present or from the past), what is one way you can recognize it is helping you to grow?

ACTIONS

  • Take several deep breaths into your belly, allowing your breath to soothe and calm this area.

  • Step into nature (if the air is clear) and take a mindful walk.

  • Hold selenite or another crystal that feels comforting in your hand.

  • Wash your hands or let fresh water run over them to reset your energy.

  • Lie down on the floor and feel the support beneath you.

  • Scream in the car to release pent-up emotions.

  • Listen to a sound bath or your favorite music.

  • Move your body: dance like no one’s watching.

  • Write it out—let your thoughts and feelings flow freely onto the page.

  • Roll out your yoga mat and give yourself the gift of practice.

  • For me, my #1 tool is staring at Rumi (my dog).

Let this week be a practice in stepping out of the trance and into presence, one choice at a time.

I love you. Keep going.
