Day 9 | Take Out the Trash
On a physical level, the act of cleansing really serves to replenish the resources within our bodies. We turn to resources like drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and mindfully eating to name a few. Yet, despite these efforts, we are still left with a mind is mostly cluttered. There are many ways to ‘resource’ ourselves. Today we explored how to drop into a resourcing practice by noticing our surroundings. Now, let’s step outside and go even deeper.
I vividly remember a moment years ago in Greece where I was exploring a potential yoga retreat center. One morning, I observed a girl named Bella, fixated on the olive trees. Curiously, I asked her what she was doing. She replied, 'Oh, I'm just taking out the trash.' Bella explained that this was a form of meditation for her—an open-eyed practice where she allows the clutter of her mind to surface and then releases it to the vitality of nature.
Engaging with nature in this way creates a unique alchemy. Meditation doesn't always have to be a formal sit; we can explore different ways to expand our mindfulness practices.
Our thoughts and stories can fill the body with debris like an overstuffed trash receptacle. We might not realize that, just like our weekly trash pickups, our bodies also need regular clearing. Imagine if we didn't have our trash collected weekly? (Moment of gratitude for our waste management system). Our bodies accumulate energetic stench when we don’t find ways of release and transformation. Stories and thoughts can ferment, embedding toxins in our bodies. Here’s something we can do about it.
MEDITATION
Try this ‘Take out the Trash’ meditation with your eyes open for about 5 minutes. Find a spot outside or gaze out a window. Draw focus to something beautiful from nature – trees, grass, sunset, flowers. As you stare, allow toxic thoughts to come to the surface, be with them, and then release each one. Before finishing, absorb the beauty of what you're observing outside—the colors, shapes, and smells. Replenish your energetic body today through this exchange with nature.
ACTION
Nature gives us so much — as you will experience in that meditation. Here is a way we can give back. As you walk through the world and you see trash strewn on mother natures’ frock, pick it up and throw it away. Consider making it a conscious practice or simply do it when you notice it. Maybe bring a pair of gloves on your next walk.
RECIPE
This recipe is a Yoga Body Cleanse favorite! Mung beans are rich in nutrients & antioxidants, high in protein, and a great source of fiber. They have a low glycemic index and can contribute to stable blood sugar levels.
These are great to batch prep for the week and delicious both warm or cold.
